Ruby referendum

One of the big problems with holding the all-important membership referendum every forty years is that when the next one finally arrives the voters who have the experience and wisdom which comes of having been fooled the last time are outnumbered by the younger voters who are about to gain it.

So it is that despite many older voters being able to recall the way the establishment lied to them in the 1970s, despite being able to look around at the ‘only a common market’ and see with their own eyes that they were lied to, and despite Edward Heath admitting live on BBC television in 1991 that he lied about the real plan when he took Britain in, the federalists who infest the corridors of power are in a position to use the exact same lies again.

That is what really rubs salt in the wounds of Remain’s inevitable victory – they are hornswoggling the public with a repertoire of tricks virtually identical to those used successfully four decades ago. Fool us twice, shame on us… This is why they’re not keen on teaching history in schools.

At least in the short term after June 23rd there may be a period where the current young are no longer so gullible, as they will soon discover their youth was taken advantage of by past masters of the old hoodwink.

Tony Benn warns of a daylight robbery:

Right then, right now…

“The plan is to have a common market parliament by 1978 or shortly thereafter.” We now know it as the European Union. A prophetic leaflet from the anti-federalist No campaign in 1975:

And federalists urge British voters to consider the prosperity and stability the European Union is famous for:

The 21st century has been bereft of great statesmen, but the EU referendum has at least brought a few great speakers to the fore. On the plus side nearly all of them are batting for Leave. Sadly, on the arse side most are also Tories and I’ll have little to agree with them on when business returns to normal.

Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson we already knew about, of course.  A pair of vile capitalists yet such oustanding talkers they could sell ice to the Eskimos. Farage is possibly the best debater in the country, which is why federalists attempt to shut him down with hysterical ad hominems and at times violence. Daniel Hannan has been a revelation, but again he is one who will be returning to the enemy trenches when this particular battle is over. The left is not so blessed with character and oratory recently. Nobody has stepped into the void where the giant figures of Tony Benn and Bob Crow once dazzled. Even if Jeremy Corbyn had stuck to his anti-EU principles instead of turning coat in fear of his New Labour colleagues he would make a pitiful replacement for the articulate and likeable Benn. As for the rest let’s hope the Beast of Bolsover is saving his quotes for the optimum moment because he has been all too quiet so far.

As well as reminding us that there are still a handful of entertainers in politics the debate has bestowed a fantastic crop of satire in the form of internet memes, and has even coaxed a splurge of top gags from the tired old Private Eye.

I’m going to do my bit to share some of the finest and most pertinent doodles and wisecracks, or in the absence of a readership preserve them for posterity on these tumbleweed-friendly pages. Not least my own modest efforts, which unsurprisingly are failing to draw the widespread acclaim they merit. There’s just no respect for yer good lord these days.

One of the most powerful weapons in any political debate is humour. Brexit has been blessed with the opportunity to roll out this supergun because the federalists have chosen to base their entire battleplan around Project Fear, and ridicule is the appropriate response to scaremongering.

It is amusing to see the EUphiles stamping their feet and demanding to be taken seriously as they predict eternal doom and gloom for the post-Brexit era. Why should we Leavers provide facts and figures to counter tainted propaganda which has about as much merit as a palm reading in Madame Humbug’s tent? Contempt is all the indulgence the Remainers deserve, and they are getting it in spades.

One must either snicker or cry when the useful idiots of the Little EUers’ internet army of soothsayers insist their visions ought to be believed and not laughed out of town. Who are these goons kidding? Themselves, I suspect. You lot are burying your heads in the sand, they declare pompously. No, just stifling our yawns. Project Fear has been repeatedly neutralised and only the weakest minds are being cowered.

We don’t know what life outside the Great Dream will look like, they tell us. We have a pretty good idea, actually – we managed without the European Union for centuries.

You’ve got no plan for the UK after Brussels! Well, we’ll muddle along as we did before. Britain has some experience in running a democracy.

We’re too small and insignificant to cope on our own, they wail. Yet over a hundred small and insignificant countries survive somehow.

Your anti-Project Fear jokes are childish, they complain. We giggle.

Of course the transition back to independence won’t be smooth. In or out of the EU this country’s economic fortunes are held to ransom by jittery City types. Somebody pops a balloon and shares crash until medics arrive to fan the poor darlings back to sensibility. The stock market has had many dark days since we joined the European superstate scheme, and will continue to have its episodes whether we make for the exit or allow ourselves to be swept up into the proposed United States of Europe. As always we’ll pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and keep on carrying on.

They would have us see them as Noah warning the ignorant of impending catastrophe, but there is no argument the Stay camp can sail which cannot easily be dashed to bits on the hard rocks of reality, and no threat that cannot be met with fully-justified mockery. It’s an invincible tactic for which the scaremongers have no effective reply, and may even give us a shout of winning the referendum. So let’s keep poking fun at the prophets of the apocalypse and cross our fingers the undecided are as sick of the hyperbole as we are…

Two Inquiries: All The Better For Hushing Things Up With.

While checking through my old posts for typos (depressingly abundant…depressing because I always spend so long proofreading these blogs and yet errors persist) and for embarrassing rants (found plenty of those, but couldn’t bring myself to delete any) I stumbled across an old draft which appears to be functionally complete. Presumably I had planned to enlarge upon it a little, but since I can’t remember what I had in mind I have published it below. The subject was the Dickens dossier, which I later heard had been discovered (if so one can only wonder how much resemblance it now bears, after so long, to its original form), although the whole story seems to have gone quiet, and the inquiry – or was it inquiries? – seems to be following in the wake of the Chilcot Report on a scenic tour of the universe. By the time the results are in we can expect all those in the frame to be feeding maggots.

The government has announced not one but two inquiries into the missing paedophile dossier scandal. Part of their job will be to track down the evidence which escaped shredding (and one suspects, to shred it).

We’re finally beginning to see proof of what I’ve believed for years – that the ruling establishment is riddled with organised child abuse communities (and no doubt other breeds of pervert). Government, the civil service, the judiciary, the upper echelons of the police, the media, social services, and so on, and so bloody sick.

Their existence has been signposted for decades by low sentencing for sex crimes, failure to bring attitudes in the justice system up to date – failure to prosecute in many cases – and the apparent disinterest across the board in tackling the rising wave of sex crime. Their influence is the obvious explanation for these cancers; and for the sexualisation of children via the media; for the fact that some children’s homes have been used as sex catalogues for wealthy rapists while pimps have been free to lurk at the gates of others; why a system exists in which so many orphaned children end up in prostitution.  Most of all it explains the promotion of the extraordinary belief that paedophile secret societies do not exist. If common abusers can form paedophile rings, what could rich and powerful child abusers put together? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

For too long this country has been an open house for the twisted among us. Frankly I’m surprised that the missing dossier story made it as far as the news, and I’m not optimistic of seeing any genuine crackdown as a result. Expect to see a few scapegoats hauled before the courts, but nothing more. The tone of the politicians when talking about this issue betrays a lack of passion about tackling the problem. These inquiries are designed to dampen public outrage, nothing more.
