Steppin’ Out
by Lord Immaculate
Being part-German (as well as having Polish and Czech blood), I was lucky enough to visit the continent before the great European experiment really began to take its toll. Travelling across Europe to stay with family, though obviously tedious at times – especially for children – was a wonderful journey.
The excitement of different languages, foods, currencies, architecture, the characters; even the much-maligned border crossings. I loved it all. Well, maybe not always the food. Europe was and to a lesser degree still is an embarrassment of riches. Arguably the most culturally diverse and fascinating continent in the world. The thought of it being steamrollered from west to east and north to south into a single sprawling grey bloc of conformity is heart-breaking. The huge grinding mechanisms of that seemingly unstoppable federal machine have already begun their work.
I will vote for Brexit because I love Europe, and I don’t conflate our home continent with the selfish ambitions of politicians and corporations. The European nations I most respect right now are the ones whose citizens have resisted the pull of the empire-building European Union. Those hardy and proud Europeans who stand their ground, refusing to be conned by relentless propaganda or bought with shallow promises, despite no doubt having some within their own establishments who work against them – disloyal servants who strive to facilitate their own annexation by the expansionist will-be superstate which looms over those lands like a skyscraper beside an elegant old church.
Many people in free Europe wait to welcome us with open arms into the barren, hellish wastelands beyond the protection of Brussels, where the vast majority of Earth’s countries apparently languish. The addition of the UK would bolster Europe’s resistance, and feel much like a long overdue meeting of old friends. I hope we don’t disappoint them.
