Lord Immaculate's Manifesto

The Widely Unwelcome Voice of Reason

The Gospel

It’s at times like these, when an impoverished nation is told how much better off it is, that your Lordship would like to see the establishment of an official statistics office completely independent from government. This agency would publish its records and research without fear of number ten’s incumbents, of the Sir Humphreys, or of the rich and powerful. It would analyse and declare the meaning of its findings faithfully and objectively, without the least concern for the light their revelations will cast on any faction. Any attempt to interfere with the affairs of this office, for instance by politicians, civil servants and corporations – who would undoubtedly wish to influence the body’s publications – would be punishable with a minimum 12 months in prison for each culprit. Any politician or civil servant found guilty of leaning on the statisticians would be permanently banned from serving in government.

With this publicly-funded fact finder in operation we would no longer need to unravel the unedifying attempts of various parties to twist and paint figures for their own advantage, because the truth of such matters would be laid bare for all to see by an organisation beyond reproach. No longer would we have to stomach the television news people mindlessly repeating dishonest claims without appropriate cynicism.

The unvarnished data and the logical deductions related to it, liked or loathed, would be on the table for all to see.

Hot Air Season

The hot air season has arrived, and I’m not talking about Summer. Be prepared for the regularly unfulfilled promises and stretching of reality.

That? That was BBC News mindlessly repeating the government’s claims that we are better off than we were 5 years ago. A nation scratches its head.

TV Me Me.

I see Dicey Dave has got pretty much what he wanted with regards to pre-election TV debates (sorry, make that ‘a debate’). I’d hate to see the television companies replace him with an empty chair for any of the talkathons when there is available a weighty replacement of great intellect and charisma itching to take his place. I refer, of course, to myself. Lord Immaculate will be happy to stand in for our errant PM and talk a great deal of sense without unnecessarily dwarfing my on-stage opponents.

Mephisto Bang To Rights

Ahhh, election time! when politicians offer the gullible everything their hearts desire, or indeed could desire, and a few other things besides. Anyone who has cast their cross in the big ballot before will know these promises have even less chance of being kept than the mountains of junk mail those guilty parties bombard us with.

Never, ever trust a politician…unless that particular statesman comes in the appealing shape of a well scrubbed Lord Immaculate.

If I were Prime Minister – and frankly I should be – the very notion of an election promise would be transformed. I’d set in stone legislature ensuring that such pledges are legally binding. Failure by the winning side to honour any of their commitments by a stipulated time would result in the monarch calling a snap election. If that stated time is the oft used and frequently forgotten ‘before the next election’, and come that marker the guarantee has not been effected, the offending party will be forbidden from standing for re-election.

This evolution in the nature of election promises would then spread to local councils and – I humbly predict – be adopted by the civilised world outside. A leap forward for democracy; binding contracts between candidates and the voting public.

And the beauty of this bill is that anyone opposing its safe passage through parliament would be untouchable to the long-suffering electorate.

Our crooked bureaucrats must chuckle at how they get the run of a system which does not hold them to account for any of their lies. Imagine a future where election pledges are locked in, with to-do dates, and failure to deliver them to the word results in weaselly MPs being unceremoniously shunted from power or even banned from holding office.
